"What the mind can conceive and believe, and the heart desires, you can achieve." ―Norman Vincent Peale
Dr Jessie Choi brings to the Arthur Samy Language Learning Centre (ASLLC) her exceptional experience and a strategic mission as an informal learning hub for enhancing language learning and cultivating an independent learning culture. Her passion and devotion have won her high praise and respect from students and colleagues.
Jessie has served as an English instructor in the Centre for Language in Education (CLE) since August 2011. She was then recommended for the position of Manager of the ASLLC in July 2015. Jessie has been in her dual roles as an English language instructor and ASLLC manager since then. She is currently responsible both for teaching English enhancement courses and for managing ASLLC. Her two roles, as motivator and facilitator of language learning, have remained constant. Jessie’s dynamic personality, intuitive management skills and creative intellect have enabled her to successfully regenerate ASLLC, developing it into an efficient and effective language learning centre. In addition, she has actively participated in enhancing teaching and learning through adopting innovative teaching approaches and strategies in curriculum design.
During her tenure as ASLLC manager, Jessie has implemented several improvements in the centre. These improvements include implementing an online booking system for language activities; designing a comprehensive ASLLC website; automating the student evaluation process; physically re-structuring the centre; and establishing an English café and an English language buddy scheme. Her goal is to foster an environment that values language learning, cultural exchange and internationalisation, while maintaining a dedicated focus on fulfilling the mission of the Institute, which is to “provide a multidisciplinary learning and research environment beyond education that is conducive to the pursuit of knowledge, free thinking and free speech, advocacy in policy and practice, and the promotion of collaboration and diversity”.
