Outstanding Performance in Teaching

The President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Teaching was established to recognise and reward excellence in teaching and to emphasise the University's commitment to fostering teaching innovation and excellence, enhancing student learning and supporting scholarship of teaching. Both individual staff members and teams at the university level are eligible for the Award.

The nominees were considered by a selection panel chaired by the President, Professor Stephen CHEUNG Yan-leung. The other panel members comprised Dr CHIU Cheung-ki (lay Council member), Dr Elaine AU LIU Suk-ching (external member from a local higher education institution), Professor John LEE Chi-kin, Vice President (Academic), Professor HUE Ming-tak and Dr TSE Ka-ho (two representatives elected by and from the Academic Board), Professor LIM Cher-ping, Professor Eric YU Kwan-wai and Professor YEUNG Yau-yuen (three Faculty Deans/their nominees), Dr LAW Kam-yee (previous recipient of the President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Teaching) and Ms Cheryl DU Junge (student representative on the Academic Board, invited by the President).

The panel members conducted a rigorous selection process comprising both textual scrutiny and interviews with the nominees. The following assessment criteria were adopted:

  • The adoption of learner-centred approaches, the ability to engage/inspire/impact students and demonstration of superior classroom acumen;
  • Course/programme/curriculum design that can reflect a command of the field; and
  • Past/present achievement(s) and leadership in teaching and potential scholarly contributions to and impact on the development of effective teaching practice within the University and/or in other institutions.
