Dr LEE Siu-yau

Dr Lee Siu-yau’s research interests lie in language policies, intergroup relations and Chinese politics. He is also interested in the issues of elderly poverty and higher education in Hong Kong.

As the Principal Investigator, Dr Lee has secured HK$1.07 million in external funding from the Research Grants Council (RGC) and the Bauhinia Foundation Research Centre. The first project, funded by the Early Career Scheme (ECS), was a study of relations between mainland Chinese immigrants and Hong Kong locals, focusing on notions of group malleability. This study, which combined experimental and traditional survey methods, produced important data about the conflicts between immigrants and Hong Kong locals. Dr Lee’s current project, ‘Vocational Education in Hong Kong’, is a comprehensive study of the factors shaping the development of vocational training in Hong Kong.

Dr Lee earned his DPhil in Politics from the University of Oxford, where he was a Swire Scholar. Since joining the University in 2014, Dr Lee has published nine journal articles (seven as first/sole author) and three book chapters (all as first/sole author) in internationally ranked and highly regarded publications such as The China Quarterly, Modern China and Political Science. Eight of his journal articles appeared in SSCI-indexed journals.

Dr Lee has played an active role in research initiatives and collaborative research within and outside the Department of Asian and Policy Studies. Within the Department, Dr Lee has been working closely with other academics in researching intergroup relations, poverty and family friendly policies, contributing to the Department’s prolific research profile. In addition, Dr Lee has contributed papers on housing and language policies to books that have been accepted by the Cambridge University Press, Palgrave and Springer.

Outside the Department, since 2016, Dr Lee has been leading a team of academics from different departments at EdUHK to conduct a project on vocational training in Hong Kong commissioned by the Bauhinia Foundation. The data collected through this project will be used to produce academic papers and a policy report in the coming years.
