Dr. XIE Haoran

Dr XIE Haoran’s research lies mainly in educational technology, artificial intelligence (AI) in education and big data. He is also interested in topics related to machine learning and learning analytics.

As Principal Investigator, Dr Xie obtained an external competitive research grant from the Innovation and Technology Fund in 2017. The purpose of the project was to provide a talent storage and big data platform for Hong Kong under the national development strategies. This project marked the first competitive research grant obtained by EdUHK in the category of the Guangdong–Hong Kong Technology Cooperation Funding Scheme from the Innovation and Technology Fund, which has fostered technological cooperation between Guangdong and Hong Kong.

Dr Xie is a prolific researcher with outstanding research achievements. Since 2016, he has published 38 articles in top-tier prestigious journals, which play a leading role in the field of educational technology, AI and related disciplines. In addition, he has published 27 conference proceedings and edited four books. His excellent research performance is internationally recognized, as he received the Excellent Paper Award at the International Conference on Blended Learning 2016 and the Best Paper Award (Runner-Up) at the Database Systems for Advanced Applications Conference 2017. In addition, Dr. Xie’s research about LSGAN has been recognized by Stanford University and Google, and one of his publications about Least Squares Generative Adversarial Networks (LSGAN) has been included in a computer science course of Stanford University.

Dr Xie has played an active role in collaborative research and professional service in and outside the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology. As a Co-Leader of the Research Group of Artificial Intelligence in Education in the Department, he has been actively involved in joint publications and projects with colleagues, honorary professors and visiting scholars. Over the past three years, he has served as organization chair and programme committee member at a number of international conferences. He was also appointed guest editor of nine journals related to AI and e-learning.
