Team Award
Department of Health and Physical Education
To support the government’s prevailing policy of promoting dual-career pathways for elite Hong Kong athletes, the University is devoted to providing elite athletes with higher education opportunities. To support the University’s achievement of this vision, the Team took the initial step of admitting former world champion racing cyclists, Mr WONG Kam-po and Mr Marco KWOK Ho-ting, to the Bachelor of Health Education (Honours) Programme (BHE) as early as 2010
Working closely together, the University and the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) were aware of the need for and importance of introducing a well-structured mechanism to balance the education and training needs of elite athletes and coaches. The Team devoted its efforts to supporting the University’s implementation of the pioneering MOU agreement with the HKSI in 2014 on the special admission of local elite athletes to all EdUHK undergraduate programmes and articulation pathways for postgraduate study. The Team proactively provided a series of effective and efficient administrative support services for the admitted athletes to facilitate their smooth study progress. Since 2010, 74 elite athletes have been admitted to the BHE programme, indicating that the programme is highly recognised and valued by the HKSI and the athletes.
Another concerted effort made by the Team was encapsulating the experience of the admitted athletes into a book, titled Dual Career Pathway of Elite Athletes. Officiating at the book launch ceremony were Mr Carlson TONG of the University Grants Committee, and Mr YEUNG Tak-keung from the Home Affairs Bureau. On the same occasion, the University made a pledge to become a pioneer “Elite Athlete Friendly University”. To go along with the pledge, the Team undertook to organise a pioneering Elite Athlete Career Development Internship Programme, with NGOs and related organisations as Elite Athlete Friendly Organizations, offering internships and job opportunities to the final-year student athletes.
The Team’s enthusiasm, creativity and proactivity in fostering the dual-career development of the local elite athletes have generated positive feedback from society. The media has widely covered the elite athletes’ activities in our programmes, and the government has provided further attention and support for the higher education aspirations of Hong Kong’s elite athletes.
