Dr LIAO Xian

Dr LIAO Xian’s research interests focus on Chinese language learning and curriculum, teaching and assessment, research methods in education, and educational psychology.

In the capacity of Principal Investigator, Dr Liao secured two General Research Fund (GRF) Grants and one Early Career Scheme (ECS) Grant in the past three years. Other than the Research Grants Council (RGC) grants, Dr Liao’s project titled “From language learning to nurture of positive values: Learning classical Chinese through multiple-text reading” was recently awarded funding from the Quality Education Fund (QEF). Dr Liao is a productive researcher, having published 21 research articles since 2021, including 8 articles published in SSCI journals.

In addition to his consistent performance in research and scholarly activities, Dr Liao has engaged in various research-related teaching activities. He has devoted a lot of effort to supervising research students and to creating experiential educational opportunities to enrich students’ research experience and enhance their research skills.

To achieve a broader research impact, Dr Liao has consistently strived to apply his empirical findings to practical language classes. He has sent research reports on his recent works on integrated writing strategies to participating schools, providing valuable pedagogical insights for frontline teachers. To align with the University’s strategic direction, Dr Liao also participated in several important research projects related to E-learning in Chinese language education, suggesting a considerable impact among schools in Hong Kong.

Dr Liao served as the Associate Head (Research) of the Department of Chinese Language Studies (CHL) from 2021/22 to 2022/23 and contributed to the improvement of the research performance of the CHL by facilitating incentive measures for research. He is also the Associate Director of the Centre for Research on Chinese Language and Education and has contributed to expanding the research network of the Centre by fostering collaboration with five institutions and organizations worldwide.
