Dr TONG Xiuhong
佟秀紅博士
Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology



Dr TONG Xiuhong is a development psychologist and neuroscientist. Her research works address contemporary topics in learning science, such as biliteracy acquisition and language learning in children.

As Principal Investigator, Dr Tong secured two General Research Fund (GRF) grants and one Early Career Scheme (ECS) grant from the Research Grants Council in the past three years. Her research has significant theoretical and educational implications for understanding key questions regarding how to unfold the neural process associated with children’s language and literacy learning, and their remediation.

The young scholar’s record of research publications is also impressive and promising. Dr Tong’s work has been published in top-tier journals, such as Contemporary Educational Psychology and Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience. Her academic achievements were recognised by being awarded as a Rising Star of the Association for Psychological Science (APS) and receiving the Early Career Reward from the Association for Reading and Writing in Asia. She was appointed to various editorial roles by Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, Educational Psychology, and Reading and Writing.

At EdUHK, Dr Tong has shown her dedication to engaging in collegial research. She has taken up a number of research positions in the University, such as leader of the Departmental Research Cluster – Language and Literacy Cluster, Chairperson of the Departmental Ethics Committee, and Deputy Chairperson of the Departmental Research and Higher Degrees Committee. Dr Tong has also provided professional research supervision and guidance to 12 postgraduates and undergraduates.

Dr Tong has been actively engaged in serving the community with her research outcomes. Using the results of one of her projects, she developed a syntax learning app for children to learn syntax in L1 and L2 in parallel. Dr Tong’s research team has also put their research findings into practice by developing an e-learning package to benefit society.
