Dr CHEUNG Sau-hung
張壽洪博士
Assistant Professor
Department of Chinese Language Studies

Dr Cheung is an outstanding, inspiring and dedicated teacher who is well respected by his students and colleagues. He has rich experience in teaching pedagogy and is committed to integrating his pedagogy with research output and practical knowledge to help students develop critical thinking skills and become active learners and reflective teachers.

The three principles that demonstrate Dr Cheung’s learning and teaching philosophy are “concisely and accurately composed”, “easily understood methodology” and “practically implemented”. He uses inspiring examples with various media to explain teaching theories and let students “learn the hows and whys”. He demonstrates the teaching of leisure reading using new, popular readings.

Dr Cheung values feedback from students and adjusts his teaching approach appropriately to meet their needs. He also uses lively language to build a good learning atmosphere to help students learn more effectively. He explores teaching resources according to research outcomes and experience obtained from services outside the Institute. He prepares all-rounded and systematic learning materials for students by including plenty of real-life cases and materials.

Apart from in-class interaction, Dr Cheung also supports students outside the classroom by providing professional pastoral care for students. He organised a series of activities named “Life Planning of a Chinese Major Student Teacher” and held a “Cheer-up Station” activity to analyse interview strategies. He also wrote letters and sent emails to encourage students to overcome difficult situations, and helped students who encountered difficulties during their field experience to realise their full potential.

Dr Cheung’s teaching performance is affirmed by students and professional teachers inside and outside the Institute. He has been invited by the educational organisations such as the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority, the Education Bureau of the Hong Kong SAR Government, the Federation for Self-financing Tertiary Education, the Hong Kong Professional Development Association of the Chinese Language and schools to take various positions, including chief examiner, academic secretary, thematic speaker, etc. and obtained good feedback from them.

Dr Cheung’s commitment to teaching is demonstrated by his sustained excellence in student evaluation. He has consistently received high Student Evaluation of Teaching scores and is greatly appreciated and respected by students. His excellence in teaching has been well recognised and he received the Faculty Teaching Award in the 2014/15 academic year.
