Early Career Research Excellence Award

Dr QIAN Haiyan
錢海燕博士
Assistant Professor
Department of Education Policy and Leadership

Dr Qian Haiyan’s research areas include educational leadership, school improvement and the influence of social and cultural contexts on schooling across Chinese societies. Her studies focus on building an indigenous understanding of how Chinese school leaders develop teachers, promote teaching and learning and improve schools.

Dr Qian’s research project, “Leading School-based Research to Improve Student Learning: Lessons from Shanghai”, was funded by the Early Career Scheme in 2014-2015. The project was rated “excellent” (with a full score of 5.0) and won an Early Career Award from the Research Grants Council. Only 22 of the 359 early-career scholars funded by the RGC in 2014/15 received this prestigious award. The project aims at building an in-depth understanding of the leadership strategies and practices associated with the successful promotion and implementation of school-based research in Shanghai. The findings will have substantial implications for schools around the world, and for Hong Kong in particular.

Dr Qian has published 11 journal papers and book chapters over the past three years (2013-2015). She has published in high-quality refereed journals such as Educational Management Administration & Leadership, the International Journal of Educational Development, the Journal of Educational Administration and the Asia-Pacific Journal of Teacher Education, and contributed to books published by Routledge and Springer.

Playing an active role in knowledge transfer and knowledge dissemination, Dr Qian has made substantial contributions to building and expanding the knowledge base of educational leadership in China. Having expanded her research network, she has collaborated with scholars from the mainland, Hong Kong and overseas. She has been invited to join two international research projects: the International School Leadership Development Network and the Europe-based LE@DS research network. Dr Qian has also built solid collaborative relationships with the Institute of Schooling Reform and Development at the East China Normal University.
