The Leadership and Service Learning Section (LSL) of the Student Affairs Office shares the motto, “We need a team to build a dream”. The LSL aims to promote students’ professional skills and knowledge while preparing them to serve our community with social responsibility and care.
The LSL has introduced various new initiatives since 2012, including setting up the Wofoo Whole Person Development Centre (WPDC) and completing the Service Leadership Initiative (SLI) project. With the setup of the WPDC, the LSL has made significant progress in enhancing students’ experiences. Over the past 15 months, the WPDC has not only provided a physical learning environment, but has also organised more than 100 development activities and offered more than 3,000 learning opportunities for students.
Among the eight higher institutions participating in the SLI project, HKIEd was the only LSL (non-academic department) to receive this external funding and conduct such a service leadership project in a co-curricular context. The LSL also took part in scholarly activities such as giving presentations and publishing book chapters, through which they shared the student leadership development model established over the years. Their dedication to achieving excellence is paramount. The LSL has also provided professional support in service learning for academic departments to launch credit-bearing co-curricular service learning courses.
The programmes introduced by LSL were all mutually beneficial to students and society at large. Through these programmes, a caring culture among students has grown and has been cultivated beyond the campus. This was evident in the mass service event, “Taipo Service Day”, which successfully connected more than 200 HKIEd students with over 10 non-governmental organizations and 100 deprived cases to enhance our community development. In recognition of the close partnership between the community and HKIEd, along with the Institute’s dedication to serving the community, HKIEd has been honoured with the “Caring Organisation” award by the Hong Kong Council of Social Service for 11 consecutive years.
The devotion and commitment of the LSL staff are exceptional. Their integrity and courage in accepting new challenges and roles are remarkable. "A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality." Realising a dream may not be easy, but the LSL’s persistence and passion make it possible.
