The Centre for Special Educational Needs and Inclusive Education (CSENIE) is a self-financing Professional Development Centre in the Faculty of Education and Human Development. The aim of the centre is to promote the betterment of inclusive education through the joint efforts of EdUHK staff from different departments with expertise and research interest in inclusive education and special needs.

Over the past two years, under the leadership of Professor Sin Kuen-fung, the CSENIE team successfully secured external funding from various sources, including the HSBC 150th Anniversary Charity Program, the Swire Group Charitable Trust, the Pei Hua Education Foundation, and the UGC Funding Scheme for Teaching and Learning-Related Proposals, to promote knowledge transfer in the domains of special needs and innovative practices.

CSENIE was invited as a collaborative partner with three special schools for an innovative e-Learning project, titled Supporting and evaluating e-Learning resource development in Hong Kong special schools. Supported by the HSBC 150th Anniversary Charity Program, Professor Sin led and managed a team for school-based consultancy, research activities, knowledge dissemination and staff training. The project created Hong Kong’s first e-Learning platform to help the learning of students with special educational needs (SEN) and created 570 e-books for students with different needs and abilities, giving both teachers and parent access, promoting digital inclusion. An Association of e-Learning for Special Education was established to champion the development of e-Learning in SEN schools through collaboration and sharing by teachers, therapists, scholars and researchers for study and reference. The Association is helping chart the way forward for the wider use of e-Learning in Hong Kong schools for all learning capabilities, different curricula, and varying school contexts.

CSENIE’s projects in special education have demonstrated a far-reaching KT impact on quality education for SEN students in special schools and the community.
