The Team started exploring opportunities to work with universities and schools in
Belt and Road countries in 2013. As a large number of countries were covered by the Belt and
Road Initiative, the Team strategically concentrated on two regions: Central and South
Asia. Many countries in these regions, particularly those in Central Asia, had previously had little
collaboration with the education sector in Hong Kong, so the Team members were really pioneers in developing
collaboration in “unexplored” regions.
An important strategy adopted by the Team was “Always collaborate with a third party to
strengthen our influence”. For example, when designing capacity-building programs, the Ministry of Education
of the country was always involved and included in the partnership, thus making the impact much wider and
more profound. To date, the Team has carried out multiple capacity-building projects in nearly 15 countries.
As a result, the entire University has become better known in these countries. For example, both the
former President and the President of EdUHK were appointed as member of the International Advisory
Council of a federal university in Russia and is the only member from the Australasian region. EdUHK was
also invited to give a keynote speech on internationalization to all university rectors and vice rectors in
Kazakhstan, which means the impact was at the national level. Although student recruitment is not a defined
task of the Team, it spent a significant amount of time approaching university lecturers in these countries
on a one-to-one basis to help them apply for scholarships to study for an advanced degree at EdUHK. In the
past five years, the number of research students at EdUHK from Belt and Road countries increased by 354%, and the
number of countries from which the students came increased by 167%. These substantial increases were
undoubtedly largely attributable to the efforts of the Team.
The success of these efforts caught the attention of the Ta Kung Wen Wei Media Group,
which recently produced a video reporting the achievements of EdUHK in Belt and Road countries. The Team's exemplary
and professional achievements have helped project a very positive image of the University in Belt and Road countries.
